There was a time in our parent’s generation when they got jobs right after college and stayed in the same job until the end. That’s not the case now, people want to explore their options and experiment before settling in for one job. People are also seen making switches even in the later stage of their careers.
Below I have discussed some of the steps that will help you make your job search easier:
· Create a list of top 10 companies you would like to work in to narrow down your options rather than applying anywhere and everywhere.
· Choose the industry of your choice, for e.g., if you enjoy gaming, you can look for a variety of jobs in the gaming industry. Such as marketing, designing, development, etc.
· Shortlist the roles and profiles that match your skills, interest, and personality.
· Further narrow down your list based on factors like company size, culture, work environment, diversity, non-financial benefits like flexible hours, hybrid work mode, etc. that might be important to you.
· Networking, is also known as the hidden job market. Many of the jobs are not advertised by the companies but rather closed through word of mouth and referrals. Ask your friends and family for referrals.
· If you already have your dream organization in mind, keep track of their job openings through their official website or LinkedIn page and apply as soon as the right one opens for you.
· Cold emailing is not looked down upon in today’s time. If you don’t find a job opening in your dream company, reach out to HR or someone working in the company through email or LinkedIn. You may not always receive a reply back but sometimes you get the details of the upcoming vacancies. Make sure to attach your CV in the mail.
· Interning or working on a short-term contractual basis can also help you get a job. It’s also one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. It allows the employer to see your potential and you can also see for yourself if the role and the company are suitable for you.
· People have also opted for creative and offbeat techniques like creating billboards or an amazon like website and selling themselves as a product to employers.
Searching process for internships can be done through the above steps as well, few of the extra things you could do are:
Ask your professors or mentors for industrial exposure and links.
Seek help from seniors and alumni who must have gone through a similar phase of interning.
Enroll with the college placement cell for regular updates on jobs and internships available.
Internship specific websites like Internshala can also help you.
